Cool Earth: Saving Forests

I want to talk to you about something really, really important: forests.

If you’ve traveled a little, you’ll know that forests are the most amazing places, places where you can really feel close to nature. Forests are also the last strongholds for some indigenous cultures and some species on the brink of extinction. And, of course, they’re essential to our survival and to our hopes of cooling down the planet and not dying of heat stroke by 2020.

Because I love forests and the planet in general, and that I’m always looking out for simple things to do to protect our environment, I’ve recently developed a total crush on the charity COOL EARTH. When I heard what the concept of this charity was, it really blew my mind! Let me explain:

As you probably know, the rainforest is constantly under the siege of deforestation. Everyday, huge areas are cut away and replaced by mines, roads, palm oil plantations, and so on. One of the reasons there’s still some rainforest left, is that significant parts of it belong by right to villagers who have lived there for generations and generations and depend on the rainforest. Sadly, these villages are often really poor, and are hard pressed to sell their trees. And that’s where Cool Earth intervenes. They give money directly to the villagers. With this money, not only the people are able to improve their lives, it also enables them to keep their portions of the rainforest intact and to protect its ecosystem, rather than being pressured into selling it.

The people who know the forest and depend on it are completely in charge.

How perfect is that?

I thought it was pretty amazing. So I went and subscribed to donate 10€ monthly. It’s not a lot of money, true, but it’s something to start on, and I can only encourage you to do the same! You won’t even realize it’s gone, but it can make a big difference in the long run.

By giving to Cool Earth, not only do you help fight poverty, you also save forests. And, guys, let me say it one more time: we need forests.

After a lot of research, I honestly think it’s the best charity to donate to right now if you want to do something for the environment, so please consider it!

To donate, it’s very easy. Go to this page, enter the amount you wish to donate, then click on “I’d like to donate regularly”. After that, you only have to fill in your bank or card informations, and you’re done in less than two minutes. You’ll then receive an email confirming your donation and inviting you to open an account on the website. You don’t have to, but I think it’s pretty fun to see what your money did. For example, here’s what my first 10€ did:

Awesome, right?
